Why your business needs to make a big change NOW
Back at the start of the year, Google made an active effort to improve cyber security within its internet browser, Chrome. With other browsers such as Firefox & Microsoft Edge following suit, HTTP pages are now deemed “not secure” if they have password or credit card fields. From October onwards, Chrome will also begin deeming HTTP pages as “not secure” if users enter data, or open the page using Incognito mode.
While Google has stated that the update will be rolled out over time, this change can majorly impact brands that don’t take cyber security seriously. The more Google makes it apparent that your web pages aren’t secure, the more likely potential customers will click away from your website. For such a small change, it can have huge repercussions for a business’ income.
Of course, we have seen the web giant make similar changes in the past, which Google claims led to a 23% reduction in the fraction of navigation to HTTP pages containing password or credit card forms on desktop. With statistics like those, can your business really risk not securing your pages throughout yet another crackdown? Google has already expressed its desire to label every HTTP page as “Not Secure” moving forward into the future.
Still not convinced? If your pages aren’t secure, you’re pretty much painting a big red target across your company for cyber criminals to take advantage of. If your pages are HTTP only, it makes it easy for hackers to execute “man in the middle” attacks. This is where traffic to your pages is intercepted before reaching you, allowing the change or stealing of your data and information. In this day and age, you’d be foolish to bury your head in the sand and ignore these changes.
